Dear _____________
I am writing to express my concern with regard of the abuses and arbitrary arrests suffered by Egyptian’s protestors during the ongoing demonstrations that are taking place in Egypt. Since 25 January 2011, at least 14 protestors have been killed by security forces and over a thousand people detained.
I call on you to rein in your forces and issue clear instructions that they should not use excessive or disproportionate force or resort to the use of fire arms unless when strictly necessary. I also urge you to protect human life, in line with the Code of Conduct for Law Enforcement Officials and the Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials;
Protesters must have the right to organize protests and demonstrate free from intimidation, violence, and the threat of detention and prosecution, therefore, I call on your government to uphold the human rights of demonstrators and to investigate the killings and the abuses carried by the security forces when policing such demonstrations.
According to lawyers and human rights organizations over a thousand protestors have been detained by the Egyptian security forces. I am concerned with the fate of such protestors and I call on you to release or charge those detained with an internationally recognizably offence and try them in fair proceedings.
Respectfully
